ABOUT AUTISM VICTORIA

Who are we?

Autism Victoria is a member-based not for profit organization. We are the peak body for Autism Spectrum Disorders in the state of Victoria.  Our aim is to improve the quality of life for people affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders, their family and carers. We also provide a range of services to individuals and agencies with an interest in Autism Spectrum Disorders, including Asperger Syndrome and PDD-NOS.

Autism Victoria generates income from a range of sources including memberships, government funding, philanthropic trusts and private donations and various activities. (make a donation)

Our Patron is Professor Margot Prior AO, who is an internationally acclaimed researcher, teacher and clinician in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

2007 was the 40th Anniversary of the formation of the association in 1967.  Visitors to our office can view a collection of documents tracking the progress of the association, and the awareness of autism over this time.

What do we do?

  • We conduct policy analysis at both a State and National Level
  • We provide a forum for members to communicate with each other and we lobby to support their interests
  • We provide specialist information and advice to the families and services caring for people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services
  • We increase the public awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders

The Autism Victoria Creative Futures Recognition Award

The Autism Victoria State Council invites nominations for this important award, made annually during Autism Awareness Week.  Professionals, Autism Victoria Members and Service Providers who have given exemplary service to the support and advancement of the organisation and the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Victoria can be nominated.  Nominations can be made at any time.  Details and a nomination proforma can be downloaded here.  Details of the 2007 recipients of these awards can be downloaded here.

Our Philosophy

Autism Victoria believes in the importance of cooperative partnerships between parents, services and professionals. Our membership is made up of parents, agencies and professionals working together to achieve the association's mission - quality services, systemic acknowledgment and public awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and the minimisation of the distress caused by Autism Spectrum Disorders.

All projects undertaken by Autism Victoria seek to enhance and extend the cooperative partnerships between families, carers and services.
